Fear Fokol is a one night only show contemplating the effect of a growing private security industry tasked with protecting those with access to capital in a fragile climate of inequality.
The show consists of sculptural work by Rasmus Richter addressing the theme of encapsulation and withdrawal through a sculptural installation and video works by Tuva Björk & Sally Jacobson meditating on the illusion of security.
We follow a nightly ride into the fears and anxiety of the city’s wealthy inhabitants and those hired to protect them. A hunt for thieves takes a new turn as the security guards are drawn into a prayer for unity. Simultaneously, in the gallery room, the artificial environment of a rotating cake fridge makes home for the slowly dissolving symbol of peace and quiet.
In South Africa there are 9,000 private security companies and 400,000 active private security guards—more than the police and army combined. As economic inequality continues to grow, the few who have accumulated capital are spending more and more money on private security services to protect their wealth from an imagined enemy, thus fuelling a boom in the industry, not just in South Africa, but around the world.
